Jurassic Park III Review

“… a movie that I can recognize isn’t great, but I also had a lot of fun watching it.”

If we’re sticking to ‘Alien’ metaphors, then Jurassic Park III hit pay dirt by being the ‘Alien: Resurrection’ of the franchise. Jurassic Park III picks up a few years after the other films and follows Dr. Grant as he is tasked with visiting the second dinosaur island in hopes of finding a child who was stranded there many weeks prior.

I can understand why people would dislike Jurassic Park III, but I found it to be a really fun action movie. The best thing about Jurassic Park III is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It is able to have fun with the concept of a dinosaur island, and that means we get to have fun watching it. The second best thing about Jurassic Park III is the fact that it is only 90 minutes long. This means that the plot is really boiled down to brass tacks, and it has very little fat. This makes for a movie that flies by, and one that is really fun to watch.

Another thing that stood out to me were the dinosaurs. Not only did Jurassic Park III have new and interesting dinosaurs to see, but they all looked pretty great. I will admit that there were a few moments of ‘early 2000’s video game’ visuals, but overall I found the effects to be a lot more well done than in the second film. Of course it doesn’t top the first, but it’s nothing to scoff at either. And it was legitimately great to see some of the old characters again. I know we got a look at Ian Malcolm in the second movie, but seeing Dr. Grant in a leading role again was wonderful. And the new characters were a lot of fun as well.

Overall Jurassic Park III is a movie that I can recognize isn’t great, but I also had a lot of fun watching it.

I give Jurassic Park III a B
